No cosmetic operation is done more often in the United States than liposuction, and it turns up in many mommy makeover plans. It is also the procedure people most often expect too much of. This guide sets out what it does, who it tends to suit, the methods surgeons use, how recovery usually goes, and what to ask an office in the Las Vegas Valley.

A free referral service, Mommy Makeover Las Vegas is not a clinic: a request sent from this page reaches an independent plastic surgery office in the Las Vegas Valley, which sets its own prices and answers for its own care.
What liposuction does
Cleveland Clinic describes liposuction as permanently removing fat cells from areas that have not responded to diet and exercise. The fat cells taken out are gone for good. The shape is not frozen, though, because putting on weight can still add fat.
Its biggest limit is in one line from the same source: liposuction is not a weight-loss solution. It reshapes areas at a weight you can keep. It also does nothing for loose skin. Where skin has stretched with pregnancy, a tummy tuck or another lift is what removes it, and liposuction is often added to refine the shape around it.
Who it tends to suit
Cleveland Clinic describes good candidates as people near their average weight, with good skin elasticity, who do not smoke. In a mommy makeover, ASPS adds being finished having children and having realistic expectations. People who are still losing weight, or whose main concern is loose skin rather than fat, are usually pointed elsewhere first.
The methods
Cleveland Clinic lists four liposuction techniques. They differ in how the fat is loosened before it is removed, and a consultation is the place to ask what each would involve for you.
- Tumescent: the most common technique.
- Ultrasound-assisted.
- Laser-assisted.
- Power-assisted.
Your surgeon chooses the method for your body and the areas treated, and may combine methods. Ask which they use most and why. Ultrasound devices carry their own risk of burns, which ASPS lists, so ask how that is prevented if your surgeon uses one.
Anesthesia and where it happens
Cleveland Clinic says either local or general anesthesia may be used, and that large-volume cases may call for an overnight hospital stay. ASPS notes that removing more than about five liters calls for special care. In a mommy makeover, liposuction usually shares one operation with other procedures, so the total time under anesthesia matters. ASPS says most surgeons agree combined surgery should last no longer than six hours.
Find out where the operation would happen. Members of ASPS may only operate in facilities that are accredited, state-licensed or Medicare-certified.
Recovery, in general ranges
These Cleveland Clinic ranges describe liposuction alone. Add a tummy tuck, as many mommy makeovers do, and the timeline stretches; your surgeon sets yours.
- Work: often within a few days for an outpatient case.
- Compression garment: worn for several weeks.
- Regular activity: within up to six weeks.
- Swelling: settles over three to six months, which is when the shape is easier to judge.
Plan for the garment. It goes on under clothes every day for weeks, so ask how many you need, how tight it should feel, and when you may take it off to shower.
Risks to talk through
On the ASPS list of liposuction risks: uneven contours, rippled or loose skin, fluid collecting under the skin, blood clots in the deep veins, heart or lung problems, injury to deeper structures, infection, altered skin sensation, a cannula breaking, and burns from ultrasound devices. Ask how often your surgeon sees each one, how they reduce it, and what a revision would involve if the contour is uneven.
Liposuction and fat grafting
Fat taken out by liposuction is sometimes grafted into the buttocks, which is what a Brazilian butt lift does. That step carries its own serious risks and its own safety guidance, set out in the guide to BBL in Las Vegas. Read it before you agree to fat grafting.
What it costs
For the surgeon’s fee alone, ASPS puts the 2024 national range for liposuction at $4,300 to $7,500. Add anesthesia, the facility, garments and prescriptions on top, and ASPS says a surgeon’s fee depends on their experience, the type of procedure and the office location. Las Vegas offices set their own prices. For a plan with several parts, see the mommy makeover cost guide.
How common it is
The ASPS 2025 report puts liposuction first among cosmetic operations for a fifth straight year, at 317,196 procedures. Popularity says nothing about whether it suits you, but it does mean many surgeons do it often, so ask how many your surgeon performs.
Questions to take to a consultation
- Is your certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
- Am I near enough to a stable weight for liposuction to make sense?
- Is my concern fat, loose skin or both?
- Which method do you use, and why for me?
- How much fat do you plan to remove, and how many areas?
- How long will I wear compression?
- Where will the surgery take place?
Certification can be confirmed through the ABPS surgeon search. If your concern is skin after a large weight loss, the guide to body contouring in Las Vegas covers the lift procedures.

Questions people ask
Will liposuction help me lose weight?
No. In Cleveland Clinic’s words it is not a weight-loss solution; it reshapes areas at a weight you can hold.
Does the fat come back?
Per Cleveland Clinic, the fat cells removed stay gone, though gaining weight can still add fat.
Will liposuction tighten loose skin?
No. It takes out fat and leaves the skin. A tummy tuck or another lift removes loose skin.
Which liposuction technique is right for me?
Cleveland Clinic lists tumescent, ultrasound-assisted, laser-assisted and power-assisted techniques. Your surgeon chooses for your body and the areas treated, so ask why they suggest one.
How long is the compression garment worn?
Cleveland Clinic says several weeks. Your surgeon tells you exactly how long.
What does liposuction cost in Las Vegas?
Prices are set by each office. The 2024 ASPS national range for the surgeon’s fee alone runs $4,300 to $7,500, with anesthesia and the facility on top.
